Covering roughly 35,000 acres Lake Kissimmee is the largest of the 5
lakes that make up the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes and is the furthest
South of Orlando. Lake Kissimmee has a long reputation for producing
trophy bass as well as quality crappie and bluegill fishing. In 1996
Lake Kissimmee underwent an extreme drawdown and habitat enhancement
project in 1996 where 24 miles of shoreline were enhanced by the removal
of accumulated organic sediment and associated vegetation that was too
dense to provide optimum fishing habitat. Subsequently, more beneficial
native vegetation became established in enhanced areas which provided
improved spawning and nursery habitat for fish.
Since the drawdown many signs of the success can be seen through
tournament results most notably the 2006 Bassmaster Classic that was won
by an angler fishing Lake Kissimmee exclusively for the entire 3 days of
the tournament. In 2004 mother nature did her part to improve Lake
Kissimmee by steering a hurricane directly over the lake again clearing
out decaying plant matter on the bottom of the lake.
As the largest lake in the Kissimmee chain and the furthest from
Orlando, Lake Kissimmee gets relatively light fishing pressure from
anglers making it a great choice to spend a day. |
